Proper Maintenance for your Rod’s and Reel’s

We all know Saltwater can be as hard on your equipment as the fish you catch
so here’s a few tips you can use to help keep your Salt Water Rod’s and Reel’s
in the best shape you can so they will last as long as possible.

The first thing you can do to protect your investment is to always rinse your saltwater rods and reels with fresh water
after your done fishing. Point the spool end of your reel down and use a light spray to rinse the line on the spool after every fishing session.

Remember to service your equipment often, just because it was built to last doesn’t mean it will. Your saltwater rods and especially the reels need to be cleaning and lubricated periodically for top performance. Saltwater and the air around a saltwater ocean can and will cause corrosion to metal period. This is why it very important to always rinse your fishing gear. Lures, rods, reels, tools and remember to clean out that metal or plastic tackle box periodically also.

How long has the line been on your reel? Does it shine or is it dull? Dull looking line usually means old line. Using the same line for too long can stress the line, if you don’t replace it, the possibility of loosing that once in a lifetime lunker becomes much greater. This is by far one of the simplest, and lowest cost effective ways to insure the least amount of problems on the water.

Saltwater is not the only enemy of your gear, if left in your boat or in the back of your truck under the blazing sun for months at a time, the sun will also wreak havoc on your saltwater fishing rods and reels. Put it away so you can enjoy it another day. Store your gear when not using it, the money you spend or save on new fishing equipment in the future can be determined by the amount of time spent maintaining your existing saltwater fishing equipment. If you were a hunter would you let your gun rust?

Saltwater rods are the enlarged version of freshwater rods, saltwater rods are built bigger, and stronger than your average rods with good reason too, the fish that are being caught in the oceans of today are much larger than your typical freshwater bass, or pike. When you’re fishing for sailfish for example, a smaller freshwater rod would snap almost upon the instant you try to hook your fish. This is why it is important to match your fishing tackle or your gear to the game you are Fishing for.

We hope you have found at least one of these tips helpful in the maintenance and care of your gear. A little TLC can go a long way in keeping your fishing rod’s and reels in tip top shape, and provide you with years of angling pleasure.
